Coughing in toddlers can be frustrating and even painful. Here are some ways you can handle your little one’s cough and help him have a better sleep.
Baby ٍSaline
If your baby has a common cold, he might find it difficult to breath through his nose due to nasal congestion. This can lead to cough.
Using saline drops can thin the mucus and make it easier to breath.
Offer Honey
If your kid is older than 1 year, give him a half teaspoon of honey before sleeping. Giving honey to children younger than 1 year could lead to botulism, a serious condition caused by bacterium called clostridium botulinum which leads to a rare form of blood poisoning.
Offer More Fluids
Water helps keep airways moist which improves his breathing. Offer him at least 1 cup of water for a 1-year-old toddler. The older he gets the more water he needs.
Keep His Head Elevated
To make it easier to breath at night, place a soft pillow, a folded towel under his head or elevate one side of the mattress. Avoid using too many pillows under his head.
Use Humidifiers
Moisture in air helps your toddler breath better. Turn it on in your kids bedroom at night. Make sure to follow the cleaning instructions.
Offer Easy to Swallow Foods
Too much cough can cause scratchy sore throat which could lead to pain while swallowing. In this case, they’ll need foods that go down easily.
Try stuff like yogurt, puddings, and ice-creams. If you’re baby is 6 months or younger, stick to breastmilk or his formula.
