Every mom waits for the moment where her baby takes his first step. It is considered one of the major changes in his life, as the baby can finally walk unassisted. Some babies start walking when they are 10 months old, while others start at one and a half years old. So it is okay if your baby does not start walking till this age. Also, children differ in the way they walk. So do not worry if you feel that his gait is a bit awkward. This will all disappear within a few months.
What are the reasons for delayed walking?
There are a few non-medical reasons for delayed walking like:
- Your baby may be afraid from walking.
- Using a walker, as the baby will depend on it to reach all places, so he will not try to use his muscles.
- Genetics. If either you or your husband were late walkers, most likely your child will be too.
- Carrying your child for long periods of time daily.
- If your child starts wearing shoes before he starts walking, they will make his feet heavy and will make it more difficult for him to start.
How can I help my baby?
Here are some tips to help you encourage your baby to start walking:
- Hold his hands to encourage him to walk. You can instruct him sometimes, yet you have to let him try walking on his own. Do not worry if he falls during his attempts.
- Do not let your child wear shoes till he learns how to walk. Leave him barefoot while at home.
- You can use shoes only when you are going out. However, you have to choose a flexible one of a suitable size and shape.
- If the floor is cold, you put socks on your child. You can also add a piece of leather or wool cloth at the heels to protect him from slipping.
- When your child starts walking, buy him a pair of flexible and soft shoes. Make sure that his toes are 1 cm away from the front of the shoes from the inside while he is standing.
- Make sure that your baby always wears socks with the shoes to avoid rubbing and to absorb sweat.
- You have to check that the shoes still fit every 4-8 weeks. Children grow fast and your child will not be able to tell you that his shoes are poor fitting. It may not cause him pain, yet it may harm his feet, because the bones are soft in this young age.
- If you noticed any feet flattening or leg bowing, consult your doctor.
Remember that at the beginning, your baby’s feet may be pointing inward or outward. But this will disappear after he masters walking.
