Some mothers notice their kids’ legs are bowed, particularly when they start standing and walking. This is quite normal, and it happens to too many children and usually disappears by the age of 3.
How to tell if a baby has bowlegs?
Bowlegs is normal in toddlers. If the child stands with his ankles touching and looking forward, yet knees don’t touch this is called “bowlegs” which is common for toddlers younger than 3. If knees touch but ankles don’t, this is called “knock-kneed”, which is common between the age of 3 and 6.
Most children recover at 3 years. A child with bowlegs shows maximum improvement Between the age of 7 and 8. This is the final shape that continues with them in adulthood.
In some cases, Vitamin C deficiency and genetics can be the reason.
When to seek a doctor?
In any age, if the mother notices extreme bowlegs, one of the legs is bowed while the other is not, or the case is getting worse with age, you should then seek a doctor.
Normally an improvement is noticed after two years, but if three years has already passed and no improvement then its advised to see a doctor.
In case of vitamin C deficiency, the doctor will prescribe a suitable treatment. He might also refer the child to a pediatric orthopedist.
Can Bowlegs be fixed?
Treatment is rarely needed. In rare cases, it may need surgery to correct severe bowlegs. Experts don’t recommend using shoes or braces that fix bowlegs, as it can cause developmental problems later in life.
