Among the important pre-labor preparations is preparing your house to be ready to receive your newborn by baby-proofing it to ensure the baby's safety and protection. Here are some helpful tips:
• You have to make sure that your baby's crib is safe. Remove any pillows, blankets or stuffed animal toys from your baby's crib as they may cause suffocation.
• Put emergency phone numbers next to all the home phones to be immediately available and within reach when needed.
• Cover all electrical outlets.
• Make sure all cords are kept out of reach of your child.
• Proof all furniture and electric appliances so they cannot be pulled down by your baby.
• If you have staircases inside the house, install plastic safety gates or barriers to keep the baby out of unsafe areas.
• Install safety latches and locks to all doors, toilet covers and drawers.
• Cover all pointy and sharp edges of furnitures like tables.
• Store all the medicines, cleaning and cosmetic products and any toxic substances out of reach of your baby.
• Remove any small items that your baby could swallow such as coins, pins and small batteries.
• Make sure house plants are kept out of reach of your child.
• If you have a pet, keep an eye on your baby when it is around it in the beginning as pets need some time to adjust and adapt to the presence of a baby in the house.
