Is your baby few months old? You’ve probably noticed his hair shedding away. You are not alone. Baby hair loss is common in the first 6 months. Here you are some details about baby hair loss and what needs to be done.

Baby hair loss is quite normal and doesn’t need you to be worried. Too many babies lose hair in the first six months. Parents get surprised when they notice the new hair is different in texture and color. This also normal.
 

Why baby hair loss happens

There are two stages of hair growth, the growth stage, and the resting stage. The growth stage is about 3 years while the resting stage stays for 3 months. In the resting stage, hair doesn’t fall until new one grow.

In all stages of life, 5-15% of hair is in the resting stage. Stress, Fever, and hormonal changes are all causes of hair loss. When any of these causes happens more hair stops growing. shedding starts when new hair grows.

Another cause of hair loss is regularly lying on one side. This causes hair to fall. It can happen due to constant rubbing of the head against the mattress.

There are other uncommon reasons for hair loss in children under 12 months:

  • Bald, reddish and scaly spots called tinea
  • Pulling hair due to hairstyles like ponytails which causes hair to disappear around the area that is pulled.
  • Child’s urgency to pick his hair which causes hair loss.
  • Soft, totally bald and round area which is can be alopecia.
  • Some medical conditions like problems in the thyroid glands.
     

What needs to be done

There is not much you need to do in the common cases.

If the reason is sleeping on one side more than the other, try various sleeping positions for your baby. Get him to frequently sleep on his stomach every day which is also good for his development.
 

When to consult a doctor

If hair loss lasts after six months it’s advised to consult your doctor. In most cases hair loss is a normal thing; however, you should ask a doctor to make sure your little one doesn’t suffer any medical conditions.
